1998  Tom Gordon of Red Sox gets his 42nd consecutive save of the year
1988  Dave Stewart wins his 20th game of the year and Oakland its 100th
1988  Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson wins the 100 meter sprint at the Olympics – he will be disqualified three days later for steroids
1985  Montreal’s Andre Dawson hits 3 HRs, including two 3 run HRs in the 5th inning – 6 RBI in an inning ties MLB record
1982  Tennis great Bjorn Borg retires at age 26
1979  Pete Rose gets his 200th hit for the 10th time – breaks MLB record of 9 set by Ty Cobb
